Listing Description
Peanut is a 13+ year old, twice rescued Congo African Grey. Having reportedly suffered abuse, he was rescued 13 years ago by a good samaritan who paired him with another African Grey. While Peanut was not regularly handled and never became tame, he did bond strongly with his cagemate and lived peacefully until that bird was killed in a tragic accident.
Peanut came to the rescue extremely fearful - growling and sometimes throwing himself from his perch whenever his cage was approached. Knowing that he had been bonded to another grey, STAR placed Peanut with fosters who themselves had African greys, but Peanut failed to bond with any of these birds.
He has now been placed with a foster who can keep him long term - to work through his fearfulness and help him bond with humans. The foster reports significant progress in the past few months and Peanut no longer reacts negatively to humans approaching his cage. In fact he now takes treats and toys directly from the foster's hands!
He is still fairly nervous about interactions and has moments of fright (particularly when his cage is cleaned or if approached too quickly or in an unexpected way), but he is now very relaxed day to day: playing with toys and grooming in his cage.
When approached slowly, Peanut seems to enjoy gentle, quiet interactions such as being spoken or sung to. He will cautiously take favored treats and even take and toss a ball toy with his fosters.
Peanut is a special needs bird and will need a patient foster experienced with behavior modification techniques and training.
Peanut would likely benefit from a quiet home without too much action.
Peanut may not react well to dogs or other non-avian pets.
Peanut is very quiet - the only noises foster has heard have been quiet clicks and very quiet squeaks (plus the classic grey growl). This is exceptionally strange in a Grey and may be behavioral or physiological. Peanut does not, and may never, talk.
