Listing Description
Due to a job offer that requires a move, we are looking for a home for our French Mastiff / Boxer / Chow who has lived in phoenix heat his whole life and does not respond well to cold climates.
Buddy is a gentle older boy who still gets excited when his people walk through the door, always ready for hugs and kisses. He has a very mellow play style. His idea of ramping it up is to flip on his back and wrestle with his feet in the air, which is also one of his favorite ways to lay.
He's a chill dude while at the same time very protective and loyal. He does not have the tendency to destroy anything with one exception: stuffed animals are his favorite snack.
He probably needs a home with a yard as he bolts if given the opportunity (he will come home but has had trouble finding his way in the past, gotten stuck behind fences, whimpered until we found him)
Because he is such a big dog and is so strong, he never took to leash walks: he runs, pulls hard, drools, will choke himself straining to go forward, knock people over and take them for a ride... Which reminds me that rides with his head out the window and cheeks flapping in the wind are one of his favorite activities.
He is a patient big "brother" of two 3-year-old girls that are a handful. We did have to train him to be familiar with them, but he is smart and learns quickly. Other new people and dog friends will need a human-interveened introductory period. He does have strong hunter instincts for small to medium animals like cats, pigeons, and mice but not usually smaller lizards or bugs.
Our amazing boy deserves a home full of belly rubs and butt scratches and will bring so many happy memories to any family.
FAQs about adopting our gentle giant
What is the personality of this French Mastiff / Boxer / Chow mix?
Our beloved pup is a gentle older boy who enjoys belly rubs and butt scratches. He has a mellow play style and is very affectionate, always excited to greet his family with hugs and kisses.
What type of home is best for this dog?
This dog would thrive in a home with a yard where he can play safely. He has a tendency to bolt, so a secure area is essential. He is best suited for a warm climate, having lived in the Phoenix heat all his life.
How does he behave around children?
He is a patient big "brother" to our two young girls and has successfully been trained to coexist with them. However, initial introductions with new people or dogs should be supervised.
Is he good with other animals?
While he is quite protective and loyal, he has strong hunting instincts, especially towards small to medium animals like cats, pigeons, and mice. Caution is advised when introducing him to other pets.
How does he behave on a leash?
Because of his size and strength, he does not handle leash walks very well. He tends to pull hard and would benefit from a home where he can explore a yard instead of being walked on a leash.
What are his favorite activities?
His favorite pastime is hanging his head out the window, enjoying the breeze with his cheeks flapping in the wind. He also loves wrestling on his back and playing with stuffed animals.
What type of family would be ideal for him?
He deserves a loving family that can provide him with belly rubs, butt scratches, and lots of attention, ensuring that he feels safe and cherished.
