WE have the mother and father in our family. Imported from Europe. Amazing lineage records Champion *** and dad are Gorgeous, Strong and loyal family pets.! The Hovawart is a German working dog breed with roots going back to the Middle Ages. The name Hovawart comes from the Middle High German words “Hova” (farmstead) and “Wart” (watchman), meaning “guardian of the estate.”
???? Original Genetics & Breed Reconstruction
The modern Hovawart is the result of a carefully planned breed revival that began in the early 20th century, primarily led by Kurt Friedrich König. At that time, pure Hovawarts had nearly disappeared, so König and others undertook a breeding program to recreate the breed using dogs that matched historical descriptions in terms of appearance and temperament.
✅ Breeds Used to Recreate the Hovawart:
The following breeds were crossed with remaining farm dogs believed to be true or close to Hovawart type:
1. Kuvasz – for size, guarding instinct, and coat texture
2. Newfoundland – for strength and calm temperament
3. German Shepherd – for intelligence and trainability
4. Leonberger – for size, coat, and family loyalty
5. Bernese Mountain Dog – for working ability and coloring
6. African hunting dogs (possibly similar to Rhodesian Ridgebacks) – for resilience and guarding instinct
The goal was to combine traits such as:
• Strong protective instincts
• Independence and loyalty
• Physical endurance
• Long, weather-resistant coat
After decades of selective breeding and standardization, the Hovawart was officially recognized in Germany in 1937 by the German Kennel Club (VDH) and later by the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) in 1964.
